Professional
Jon is a Detroit native, who began his career as an insurance defense attorney, in 1987, while living in Los Angeles, California. After a few years there, he moved to London Ontario Canada, and subsequently had an opportunity to practice in Chicago, again, as an insurance defense attorney, defending auto cases, and nursing home liability matters. Jon returned to the Detroit area in 1995, and has worked for both Plaintiff's personal injury litigation firms, and in-house for a major large insurance company.
Jon opened up his own practice in 2002, serving clients' needs in the areas of personal injury (auto accident, no-fault insurance claims, and premises liability), expanding into probate matters, drunk driving, minor in possession, drivers license restoration, traffic ticket defense, and accepting Court assignments in probate and criminal matters.
In 2011, Jon expanded his practice, by opening up an office in Richmond, MI.
Professional Interests
In addition a busy professional practice, Jon has been active in giving back to new lawyers' in the course of their training, serving as a volunteer "judge", periodically, in Wayne State University's Trial Advocacy Mock Trial Program.
Interested in furthering the interests of civil justice, and access to our court system for all, regardless of wealth or position, Jon has for years, been a Sustaining Member of the Michigan Association for Justice.
Jon constantly attends seminars on all of his practice subject matters, believing that education never ends, and an attorney's professional duty to stay current on legal subjects did not end with graduation from law school.

• HB 4936 - Proposal To Increase Taxes & Health Insurance Premiums
Current topical professional interests include the progress of HB 4936 through the Michigan Legislature (see no-fault page). Common sense, and the public good, demand that this legislation be defeated.
HB 4936 promises to undermine a program that is both effective for accident victims, and profitable for insurance carriers, all at the same time, increasing taxes and private health insurance premiums (by shifting people into tax-supported Medicaid and private health insurance supported by health insurance premiums). This legislation has been proposed, somewhat disingenuously I believe, by special interest lobbyists, who argue (again somewhat deceptively) that Michigan no-fault insurers need taxpayer support for their profitability; they do not, of course. I invite you to review a study done a few years ago, by Professor Jay Angoff, on the profitability of no-fault insurance carriers; this study was updated most recently in 2011, and you will find a link to this updated survey below, as well.

Additionally, Jon is currently advocating for passage of Senate Bills 642 & 643, increasing the criminal penalties for those who assault nurses, doctors, and other health professionals (including EMT's, physical/occupational therapists, and physicians' assistants), in the course of their professional work.
This legislation originated in the Michigan State Senate, and on September 21, 2011, passage was recommended by the Senate Judiciary Committee; they were concerned enough to recommend that this bill have "immediate effect". As you know, both houses of our state legislatures (and Congress at the federal level) have to pass legislation before the Governor (or President, in the case of the US Government) can sign/veto the bill.
Accordingly, one month later, on October 19, 2011, this nurse-protection legislation was reported to the Michigan State House of Representatives, and it has sat there dormant for the last five months. It took one month for the State Senate to spot the issue, consider it in Committee, and to pass the entire Senate (not an easy feat, these days, when politicians do not seem to be able to work together on much!). However, for five months, our Michigan House of Representatives has evidently not seen the priority of protecting the lives and safety of Michigan's nurses and other health professionals.
The work our State's health professionals do, is already made difficult enough; daily, they face the challenges posed by deaths, as well as difficult, graphic and unpleasant work. They face a work environment made more difficult by reduced reimbursements from private health insurers and Medicaid/Medicare, and occasionally, by employers more concerned with "penny-wise, pound-foolish" issues, than they are with recognizing the hard work that all health professionals, but nurses in particular, do every day, with grace, skill and professionalism.
I invite you to contact the Michigan Nurses Association at www.minurses.org, and let them know how much you appreciate the hard work of Michigan's nursing professionals. I invite you, as well, to contact your State House Representative, to let them know that you expect them to move this important legislation out of the House, to the Governor's desk, immediately.

• Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
Also referred to as "Obamacare", it is the package of health care reforms that were proposed by the President, and are now being considered by the US Supreme Court. Many people oppose it passionately, while others support it, just as passionately; there are understandable grounds on each side of the issue.
Whether you support it or oppose this law, much of it is already in place, and there may be things in it, that people in general, or you in particular, should be really concerned about, things that perhaps you do not yet know. From the other viewpoint, this legislation may offer important benefits that you may be entitled to; I offer no opinion. However, whether you support it or oppose it, you should know what the legislation actually says.

Personal
Jon is a Detroit native, a 1976 graduate of Oak Park High School, in Oak Park, MI. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, as an Evans Scholar, graduating in 1981 with a degree in Economics and Political Science.
The Evans Scholarship is given annually to deserving young people, who have worked as golf caddies at area country clubs, mostly around the Midwest. A link to this important and worthy scholarship foundation is at: Evans Scholars Foundation.
After joining the working world for a few years, he attended Southwestern University School of Law, graduating in 1987, with a law degree, sometimes referred to as a "Juris Doctor", or "JD".
Jon is the proud father of two young men, with whom he shares a passion for golf, Detroit Tiger baseball, Detroit Lions football, Red Wing hockey, reading and music. Jon is engaged to marry a wonderful woman, Pam, who introduced him to Richmond MI, and all it has to offer. No wonder he has opened his new office there!! (Pam, a registered nurse, also informed and educated Jon on the nurse-protection legislation now pending in the House).
