Julian R. Friedman, Of Counsel, is a Martindale and Hubbell “AV” rated member of the Tax and Estate Planning section of the firm.  Mr. Friedman concentrates his practice in the areas of taxation and estate planning, trusts and estates, corporate law, probate and estate administration, and mediation.  He is a member of the State Bars of Georgia and South Carolina and is a Fellow in both the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and the American College of Tax Counsel (ACTC).  Mr. Friedman was certified as a Mediator by the American College of Trust and Probate Counsel in 2004 and by the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution in 2006.

Mr. Friedman, a native of Savannah, was graduated from Emory University cum laude in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  He attended the University of Chicago Law School on a National Honor Scholarship and was elected to participate on the University of Chicago Law Review.  He received his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he served as Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the Student Editorial Board of the Georgia Bar Journal and received the Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Graduate award.  Mr. Friedman is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies. 

As a National Honor Scholar, Mr. Friedman attended New York University on a teaching fellowship, where he was awarded the advanced degree of L.L.M (in Taxation) in 1964.

His writings on tax subjects have been nationally published in the CCH Financial and Estate Planning Tax Service, The Tax Magazine, Estate Planning, Taxation For Lawyers, Taxation For Accountants, Tax Law Review, and Georgia State Bar Journal.  He has taught federal income taxation at Armstrong State College and has been a frequent lecturer on tax subjects.

Mr. Friedman has served as President of the Federal Bar Association, President of the Savannah Estate Planning Council, President of the Coastal Georgia-Carolina Phi Beta Kappa Association, Chairman of both the Fiduciary Law and Tax Sections of the State Bar of Georgia, Chairman of the Georgia delegation to the Southeast Liaison Tax Committee, and as a member of the State Bar’s Probate Code Revision Committee, Guardianship Code Revision Committee, and Trust Code Revision Committee, the work of which was responsible for major revisions of Georgia statutory law in those areas.    

Outside of his law practice, Mr. Friedman is a Past President of Congregation Mickve Israel and the Savannah B’nai B’rith chapter.  He has served as Past President of the Coastal Georgia-Carolina Phi Beta Kappa Association and of Georgia Public Radio WSVH.  He is a retired Air Force Reserve officer.

Mr. Friedman has been named a 2013 “Best Lawyers in America” in the categories of Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law, Tax Law, and Trusts and Estates and has been the recipient of this honor many times over.  He has been named as a Georgia Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine for the past six years., inclusion on that list being the product of a rigorous peer review process reserved for the top 5% of lawyers in the State of Georgia.  He is listed in numerous national and international legal Who’s Who, and other directories.

Mr. Friedman is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
