Scott Hackwelder advises clients on intellectual property rights in connection with mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and technology transactions.  He regularly negotiates and drafts license agreements and transaction documents relating to patents, trademarks, and copyrights.  Scott also consults on complex IP issues involved in licensing, joint ventures, and corporate spin-offs.     

As a patent attorney, Scott's experience at Jones Day also includes mechanical patent prosecution, patent and trade secret litigation, and unfair import investigations conducted by the U.S. International Trade Commission.  Prior to earning his law degree, Scott worked for nearly nine years as a consulting engineer, and he is licensed as a professional engineer in Pennsylvania and in Texas (inactive).  Scott has published articles on Federal Circuit jurisdiction and software patent licensing in the Syracuse Law Review and in the AIPLA Quarterly Journal.  His arguments were quoted during an oversight hearing on the Federal Circuit and the state of patent appeals held by the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property of the House Committee on the Judiciary.

Scott has served as a director and as the secretary for Cleveland's West Side Catholic Center.  He also has provided pro bono services and representation as a volunteer for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland.  Scott is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
