Jennifer Swize represents clients in complex litigation matters at all stages of a case, with particular focus on trial court motions and appeals. Her substantive areas of practice include patent litigation, constitutional law, and contract disputes. She also has extensive experience in civil and appellate practice and procedure. Jennifer handles matters in federal and state courts and before arbitration panels and in other alternate dispute resolution proceedings.
Most recently, Jennifer and other Jones Day attorneys successfully defended a summary judgment ruling in their client's favor, finding that the plaintiff's patent claims were invalid. Other representative matters include successfully opposing allegations of contempt of a patent infringement injunction, both in the district court and on appeal; successfully opposing a Commerce Clause challenge to economic development incentives at various levels of state court; and successfully reinstating on appeal a complaint that had been dismissed by the trial court.
Jennifer's appellate work includes pro bono matters, and she currently represents a federal inmate on ineffective assistance of counsel claims. In a prior representation of another federal inmate, Jennifer successfully argued before the Sixth Circuit that the inmate was entitled to an evidentiary hearing on his ineffective assistance claims, thereby reversing the decision of the district court.
Jennifer is a member of the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court and has been a guest speaker on appellate practice at area law schools.
