William Martin is a trial lawyer by training and a problem solver by practice who divides his time between civil and criminal litigation. His civil practice includes matters involving commercial litigation, patent and trademark infringement, the False Claims Act (including qui tam lawsuits), partnership disputes, board of director liability litigation, shareholder derivative suits, securities law, and theft of trade secrets. On the criminal side, William has been involved in criminal matters concerning Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigations, allegations of antitrust violations, health care fraud, insider trading, securities fraud, defense contracting fraud, ERISA violations, and other substantive areas.

William has served as counsel to corporations and other corporate entities including audit committees, corporate boards of directors, and compliance officers regarding internal investigations in a broad variety of civil and criminal matters including corporate malfeasance, accounting irregularities, and regulatory and compliance matters. He also has represented individuals and corporations in connection with grand jury proceedings conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as investigations and enforcement actions brought by either the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission or various state agencies.

Prior to joining Jones Day, William served as an assistant U.S. attorney in San Francisco. While in the U.S. Attorney's Office, he held primary responsibility for all aspects of the investigation and prosecution of matters relating to white-collar crime, firearms, and illegal narcotics in the Northern District of California. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, William was a federal clerk at the trial and appellate levels.
