Mark K. Suzumoto is a business lawyer and civil litigator with over 25 years of experience. Mr. Suzumoto serves as outside counsel to an array of domestic and foreign businesses engaged in the manufacture, importation, distribution, and sale of consumer products, durable goods, and food products. He provides regular advice and counseling on state and federal regulatory and compliance issues under the laws administered by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Food and Drug Administration, and Federal Trade Commission. He regularly handles governmental compliance matters, including regulations under the recently enacted Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. He understands the need for practical and timely business solutions to product non-conformity and misbranding issues, and the establishment of effective product recalls and stock recovery programs.
General Business Advice
Mr. Suzumoto serves as outside general counsel and legal advisor to a variety of small and large enterprises in various business sectors. He routinely reviews, negotiates, and drafts standard business agreements and licenses. In addition, he handles a broad scope of transactions, including the sale and purchase of businesses and equipment.
Intellectual Property
Mr. Suzumoto regularly provides advice to clients on trademark, copyright, and patent (non-prosecution) matters and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. He has prosecuted and defended copyright, trademark, and patent infringement matters relating to published materials, computer peripherals, writing instruments, bicycle components, and lighter products.
Products Liability Litigation
Mr. Suzumoto serves as national counsel to consumer product companies and has supervised and directed complex products liability litigation throughout the country. He has served as lead or co-counsel in products liability litigation in federal and state courts in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Trial Work
Mr. Suzumoto has served as counsel in jury and bench trials, arbitrations, and administrative proceedings on many topics, including employment and contract disputes, business torts, intellectual property infringement, complex products liability, and simple negligence. He has tried high-exposure cases on behalf of such clients as the American Honda Motor Co., Ford Motor Company, Nissan Motor Corporation (USA), and Scripto-Tokai Corporation.
Personal History
Mr. Suzumoto is a third generation Southern Californian born in Van Nuys and raised in a rapidly expanding San Fernando Valley. Following his graduation from U.C. Davis in 1976, Mr. Suzumoto joined VISTA and served as a volunteer in rural Iowa and Missouri. Thereafter, he worked for the Peace Corps/VISTA program in upstate New York, where he attended law school. He returned home to California to begin his legal career. Mr. Suzumoto and his wife, Sonia, are long-time residents of Westlake Village and have three Eagle Scout sons, John, Thomas, and Luke.
